Lake Barkley Fishing Report~~Dave Stewart

September 14, 2006

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Ky Dam - 355.9 Surface Temperature - 77
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 356.0 Surface Temperature - 77

Both lakes are 3 ft below summer pool with little fluctuation. In last week's report I alluded to the fact that we were approaching the time for the fish to transition from summer to fall patterns. I also mentioned that if present weather patterns continued we could be looking at an early fall bite. The water temperatures have dropped another 2 degrees since last week and the fish are definitely in transition now. The weather forecast shows that although we will have one day this weekend with a high of 87, the rest of the days in the 10 day forecast is for highs in the 60's and 70' with lows ranging from the 50's with even a couple of days with low temperatures in the mid 40's early next week. If this trend continues we will definitely be on a full blown fall fishing pattern early this year. Today I saw the first major school of adult threadfin shad in the back of on of the larger creeks. The shallow fish I have been catching this week are of more quality than the shallow fish that I was catching during the summer patterns. We still have plenty of fish on the ledges but some are moving in and this movement should continue with these kind of weather forecasts.

Largemouth Bass: The Largemouth Bass are being taken both on ledges and humps near the mouths of the bays as well as on the flats in the creeks and bays. The deeper fish are being taken on deep diving crankbaits, carolina rigged creature baits and worms and jigs. The shallow fish are being taken near vegatation on topwater early and late in the day (and during the day on overcast days), spinnerbaits, Texas rigged creature baits and tubes and deadstick worms.

Smallmouth Bass: The Smallmouth Bass are being taken on the river ledges and main lake points on Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs. Some Smallmouth are being taken early and late in the day in shallow water on topwater lures and deadstick worms.

Some of the productive lures this week are: Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Lucky Craft G Splash in ghost pearl lemon, Yozuri poppers in same pattern as the G-splash (not sure what they call the pattern), Zoom horny toads in white, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Hook Some Bass baby brush hounds in watermelon/purple, Hook Some Bass tubes in green pumpkin and chameleon craw, Norman deep little n in rootbeer, Bandit crankbaits in rootbeer and Strike King bitsy flip jigs in green pumpkin/craw with Paca Craw trailer in green pumpkin.

White Bass: The White Bass are being taken along the river channels by vertically jigging spoons and inline spinners. Fish are also being taken by trolling these lures behind deep diving crankbaits. I have seen a few jumps in the bays this week but they are of short duration. More White Bass should start showing up in the bays and around the mouths of the bays very soon.

Rockfish (Striped Bass): Some rockfish are now being taken in the bays on spinnerbaits and topwater lures early in the day....if the fall pattern this year for these fish repeats the same as last two years there will be some good schools of these fish working the baitfish schools on the bays when they move in.

Catfish: Some big catches of Catfish are being reported. These fish are being taken along the old river channels with bottom bouncing rigs baited with shrimp, leeches and yellowtail.

Bluegill: The Bluegill are active around the docks and are being taken on worms and crickets fished under bobbers. Bluegill are also being taken near vegatation in the backs of the bays.

The fall bite is rapidly coming upon us....let's hope for a long fall this year (fall fishing is always a lot of fun). If you are in need of a guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email. I have the following dates available in October and November:

October: 12, 13, 22, 24, 27, 29, 30, and 31

November: I have plenty of dates in November...now is the time to book to get the date(s) you want.

Later this month we will start seeing a lot of big end of year bass tournaments here on the lakes. I would like to welcome all of you folks coming to fish our lakes. I am sure you will find a lot of good Kentucky hospitality here from the good folks in the lakes area. I would like to recommend that if you have any problems with your boat or need any boating equipment that you check out the fine folks at Jet-A-Marina located on U.S. 62 in Calvert City just north of Ky Dam. These folks have taken care of me and my clients for years and do an excellent job. For those of you that are looking for some good selections of fishing lures and tackle, let me suggest you drop in at The Cabin Bait and Tackle located on U.S. 62 just west of Kuttawa. You will find a lot of top line lures there as well as many of the local favorite custom lures you cannot get back home.
